Where the numbers come from
Every figure on NM Can Data comes from public records. This page lists the sources, how they're checked, and exactly how each metric is defined.

What each page is for
- Map
- Every store on a map, month by month, colored by growth. Click a store for its card and local market.
- Market
- The monthly report: one month's numbers, compared with last month, last year or any year.
- Analysis
- How the market works over time: demand per adult, saturation, churn and survival, concentration, seasonality, the Texas border effect, excise tax.
- Leaderboard
- Every store ranked for any month, with local market share at 1, 5, 10 and 25 miles.
- Brands
- Operators and chains: footprint, market share, same-store growth and takeovers.
- Products
- Product brands on store shelves: brand × store matrix, shelf prices by size, price vs THC, menu mix and a searchable product table (Weedmaps snapshot).
- News & Laws
- Bills, rules and news that could move the market (mockup).
How it's checked
Each month, the sum of every store row must match both the state's city file and the state's own "Totals" row. If any month is off by more than 0.5%, the update stops. So far every month matches to the cent. The state's files have known quirks (mislabeled files, renamed columns, a totals row at the bottom of each sheet), and the pipeline handles each one.
Addresses are cleaned before grouping (suite numbers removed, street types standardized, near-duplicate spellings merged), so a store keeps one history even when its license name or filing changes.
Definitions
- Store / location
- One physical address. Several license records at the same address (e.g. separate medical and adult-use filings) are combined.
- Brand / operator
- The business reporting the most sales at an address that month. Chains that file under several company names are grouped into one brand (see Brands). This is the retailer, not a product brand.
- Chain
- A brand with 3 or more locations reporting sales that month. Everyone else is independent.
- MoM / YoY
- Change vs. the previous calendar month / the same month a year earlier. A store missing that month shows "new".
- Average ticket
- Sales ÷ transactions, from the state's city file. Not available per store.
- Opening
- A store's first month with sales (stores already selling in April 2022 don't count as openings).
- Closing
- A store with no sales for 2 straight months up to the latest month. It's counted in the month after its last sale, so each month's closings are confirmed a month later.
- Ownership change
- A different business reports the most sales at the same address than in the previous month. Renames of the same business are ignored.
- Survival
- Share of stores opened in a year that were still reporting sales 6, 12, 24 and 36 months later.
- Ramp-up
- Months until a new store first reaches 80% of its best month in its first 18 months.
- Same-store growth
- Sales change counting only stores that sold under the same brand in both months, so openings and closings don't distort it.
- Sales per adult
- Trailing 12 months of sales ÷ residents 21 and over (Census).
- Stores per 10k adults
- Active stores ÷ residents 21+ × 10,000. Density and spend indexes compare an area with the state average (100).
- Local share (1 / 5 / 10 / 25 mi)
- A store's sales ÷ sales at all stores within that straight-line distance, itself included. Rivals = other stores in the ring. Uses stores with an exact address only.
- Concentration (HHI)
- Sum of squared brand market shares, 0–10,000. Under 1,500 is unconcentrated.
- Consistency
- Standard deviation ÷ mean of a store's last 12 months of sales: steady under 15%, volatile over 35%.
- Texas border distance
- Straight-line miles to the NM–TX state line.
- Estimated excise tax
- Adult-use sales × the state excise rate (12% through June 2025, then +1 point each July until 18% in 2030). Medical sales are exempt. Assumes reported sales exclude tax; gross receipts tax isn't included.
- Medical $ per patient
- Medical sales ÷ active enrolled Medical Cannabis Program patients that month.
Limitations
- The public files don't include prices per gram, product categories (flower, vapes, edibles), wholesale prices, or transactions per store.
- "Brand" is inferred from license names. Groupings are reviewed by hand, and parent companies still need checking against outside sources.
- Census figures are 5-year estimates; small towns have wide margins of error.
- Distance rings use straight-line miles, not drive time.
Update schedule
The site checks the state's catalog every day and rebuilds when a new month appears (usually early in the following month). Census figures refresh each December; patient counts monthly.
